About Zion Institute

A Capacity Building Organization for Social Impact

Zion Institute designs, tests, and scales evidence-based programs that address social determinants of health — equipping communities, organizations, and local leaders with the tools to create lasting, systemic change in southern Phoenix and beyond.

Who We Are

Building the Infrastructure for Community Transformation

Zion Institute is a 501(c)(3) capacity building organization focused on social impact program development. We exist to close the gap between community need and sustainable, scalable solutions — developing replicable models that other organizations can adopt, adapt, and deploy.

Our work is grounded in the social determinants of health framework — the understanding that health outcomes are shaped not just by medical care, but by education, economic stability, housing, social connection, and the environments where people live and work. Every program we develop targets these upstream conditions.

Our Framework

Addressing Social Determinants of Health

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. Research consistently shows that these factors — not clinical care alone — account for the majority of health outcomes. Zion Institute builds programs that intervene at this level, creating change that is deep, durable, and generational.

Education & Early Development

Quality education from birth through adolescence is one of the strongest predictors of lifelong health and economic well-being. Our Excellence Academy directly addresses this determinant.

Economic Stability

Poverty and economic insecurity drive poor health outcomes. Our programs build pathways to economic stability through education, workforce development, and entrepreneurship support.

Community & Social Context

Strong social networks and community cohesion protect health. The Well campus demonstrated how intentional community building activates existing assets to strengthen social bonds.

Neighborhood & Environment

The physical and social conditions of a neighborhood shape opportunity. We work in southern Phoenix to improve the conditions that determine whether residents can thrive.

Excellence Academy at Zion — Proven Business Model

8 Years of Education Excellence, Ages 1–12

The Excellence Academy at Zion is Zion Institute's flagship program and a proven business model for education that directly addresses social determinants of health. Operating for over 8 years, the Academy serves children ages 1–12 through two integrated programs: a comprehensive early childhood education program for ages 1–5, and an after-school program for school-age children through age 12.

Early Childhood Education (Ages 1–5)

A comprehensive program combining STEM and performing arts curricula with wraparound family support services. Children develop foundational cognitive, social, and emotional skills during the most critical window of brain development.

After-School Program (Ages 6–12)

Structured academic enrichment, mentorship, and skill-building for school-age children. The program bridges the gap between school and home, providing safe, supportive learning environments during critical after-school hours.

Family Wraparound Services

The Academy partners with families to connect parents with resources, guidance, and community networks — strengthening the home environment and reinforcing learning at every stage.

A Replicable Model

After 8 years of operation, the Excellence Academy is a tested framework that other community-based organizations can adopt. It demonstrates how quality education and family support can be delivered sustainably at the community level.

The Well Campus — Demonstration Project

Proving That Communities Can Build Themselves

The Well campus was a landmark demonstration project that showed how a community can be built and sustained by leveraging its own existing assets. Rather than importing outside solutions, The Well activated the people, spaces, relationships, and knowledge already present in the community — creating an integrated environment that addressed multiple social determinants of health simultaneously.

1

Asset-Based Community Development

The Well proved that lasting transformation starts with what a community already has. By mapping and mobilizing existing assets, the project built authentic, durable infrastructure without dependency on external resources.

2

Integrated Service Delivery

Education, economic opportunity, health resources, and social connection were woven together in one campus environment — demonstrating the power of addressing social determinants holistically rather than in silos.

3

A Blueprint for Replication

The lessons from The Well now inform Zion Institute's capacity building work with other organizations. The project became a living proof-of-concept that other communities can study, adapt, and replicate.
